Alternatively, without knowing what the house yeast is, WLP007 would IMHO be acceptable as well. This is the recipe I worked up, I'm not saying it's right or wrong, I'm just going off of the info I've been given. As far as the color, the beer is not that dark at 6-7SRM/15 EBC and according to my calculations on ProMash the info I received from the brewery it hits the mark. Since I think Harpoon was shooting for an English IPA vs. Using british 2-row as your base grain can achieve a malty, biscuity note in the beer as well. As far as maltiness goes, you don't need a high mash temp or munich malt to achieve a "malty" character. I'm sure that the 42 IBU's are the measured IBU's after fermentation and those measured in the wort or calculated are in the low 50's. I also doubt the recipe has changed that much in 4 or 5 years. I don't think Harpoon is trying to be covert or deceive the public as too what is in there beer. ThatGuy, don't shoot the messenger I'm just quoting the info I read off the website as well as received from the brewery and trying to help a brewing brother out. It's a VERY malty beer, and firmly bitter for only 42IBUs. That sounds like it will mimic some of the flavor, but it doesn't seem like it will get you close to the color or the maltiness i've had in the beer. ![]() Hope this helps! Send me a bottle if you get good results! Yeast is our own house yeast, but you could use the White labs California Ale strain to good effect. We use a mash temp if 151 F, a fermentation temp of 69F, and condition at 34F. Hops: Nugget for bittering (5 minutes into boil), flavor (45 minutes into boil), aroma (added to whilpool), and Cascade dry hopping (added after cooling fermented beer for conditioning). Grist Bill 94% Pale 2-row, 5% Caramel 20L, 1 % Briess Victory malt I haven't plugged it into Promash or anything, but I think this will steer you in the right direction. I did however contact the brewery and I still have their email response! Here is what Ariana at Harpoon listed for their IPA. I was new to brewing and wanted to replicate the recipe myself! I never did get around to brewing it as life, kids, etc. I actually enjoyed the beer greatly the first time I had it in Boston almost 5 years ago. Good luck! jgourd Posts: 27 Joined: Fri 10:56 am Next time I might dry hop a bit with cascade to more mimic the Boston version, but not too much. Here's the recipe I used (I call it Harpooned IPA ): ![]() But that could be because the one in Boston was probably "fresher." In any event, I love this beer and have brewed a clone of the Austin version. The one in Boston had much more hop flavor and aroma.
